Man sentenced to 15 years for murder

The family of Khayelihle Moses Cele is unhappy with the sentence given to the man who murdered him.

A year after Khayelihle Moses Cele was stabbed to death in Mkholombe, a 26-year-old man was convicted of murder.

The Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court recently sentenced Okuhle Sibangalala to 15 years in prison for Cele’s murder.

However, Cele’s family told Fever that they are unhappy with the sentencing.

In March 2023, former Margate police spokesperson Sergeant Sibu Ncane told Fever that police responded to a murder scene in Mkholombe on March 5, where Cele’s body was found with several stab wounds.
Ncane said Sibangalala was arrested on March 7.

Speaking to Fever, Cele’s brother Simlindile Shinga said the family was not happy with the sentencing, adding that they were to meet as a family over the Easter weekend.

He said they want to put their heads together to find a way to appeal the court’s decision.

“We don’t feel justice has been served, mostly because he received a sentence of 15 years, knowing how prisons work in South Africa, he will get parole for good behaviour after serving seven years and that is not justice,” he said.

He added that his brother (33) is survived by one child.

Recalling the day his brother died, Shinga said: “My brother and I lived together in Mkholombe. He was murdered on his way to visit the mother of his child who also lives in the area. The incident happened while I was working night shift. I was informed by a neighbour the day after that my brother had died after being mugged. After Okuhle was arrested, we tried everything from opposing his bail to demanding a harsher sentence for him.”
