Stars FC shines too bright for Mawiza XI

Fever Local News |

Dubbed a grudge match, Shooting Stars FC grabbed bragging rights as the kings of the Easter Football Tournament, which was organised by the ANC in the Brian Nodada Branch in Oshabeni Location near Port Shepstone.

Before this clash, expectations were high as in a previous tournament, Stars had knocked out Mawiza XI, and in the two side’s league match, Mawiza had defeated Stars 2-1.

The three-day tournament had the final between Shooting Stars FC and Mawiza XI.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 after regulation time, and the winner had to be declared via a penalty shootout.

Stars was the first to find the back of the net, two minutes before the break. But their joy was short-lived as Mawiza responded with a goal within minutes. No goals were scored in the second half, and few goal-scoring chances were missed.

Stars converted their five kicks while Mawiza missed one, the last one was not taken into account as the score was already 5-3 in favour of Stars.

Stars won a new kit, trophy and a sheep while Mawiza walked away with a new kit. Speaking on behalf of organisers, Brian Nodada Branch member who also serves as Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s chief whip, Teddy Hlophe encouraged sport to get people together.

“It’s a challenge of the ANC leadership that these games should become an annual event, not only because we are heading for elections. Next year, the standard of these games should be much higher and in the future, we should have scouts to identify talent,” said Hlophe.

Shooting Stars director, DU Jali said it was encouraging to see such games in their area.
