Prison for house robber

Simphiwe Mchunu was sentenced to 15 years' in prison for targeting the communities of Umtentweni and Southport.

The Port Shepstone Regional Court recently sentenced Simphiwe Mchunu (28) to 15 years’ imprisonment for house robbery.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

According to police, Mchunu, who is from Louisiana, targeted the communities of Umtentweni and Southport. He was sentenced on seven counts of house robbery, housebreaking, attempted housebreaking and theft.

He was arrested in June 2023 and remained in custody throughout his trial.

The investigating officer in all the cases was Detective Sergeant Morne Jones of Port Shepstone Detective Service.
Ugu District Detective Commander Brigadier Bongani Sibiya said he was satisfied with the sentence and hoped this would serve as a warning to people involved in property crimes.

He added that he was also proud that he has detectives of such a high calibre under his command who effectively bring criminals to trial.
