IEC emphasises public’s right to vote
The IEC said in all four municipalities under the Ugu District, voting stations will open from 07:00 to 21:00.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Ugu District is asking South Coasters to go out in their numbers to vote on May 29.
The IEC’s Regional Outreach Officer, Andile Msomi, said voting was another way of voicing concerns instead of going out to protest and destroying public infrastructure.
Msomi was speaking to the Fever as the country gears up for elections.
He said Chapter 2 of the South African Constitution Section 19 under Subsection 3a, states every adult citizen has a right to vote in the election for any legislative body established.
Preparing the public for the elections, Msomi said previously, there were only two ballot papers when it came to national and provincial elections.
“Due to recent amendments to legislation, now there will be three ballot papers. A national ballot will consist of a list of political parties vying for 200 seats in the National Assembly. This ballot will be used to vote for political parties. The second is the regional ballots which will have political parties and independent candidates contesting for the seats reserved for each province in the National Assembly. Voters will use this ballot to elect a political party or an independent candidate to represent them in the National Assembly,” he said.
He added that the provincial ballot will be unique to each province, saying that it will include parties and independent candidates competing for seats in each respective provincial legislature.
Msomi said this ballot will allow voters to choose either a political party or an independent candidate to represent them in provincial legislatures.
He said in all four municipalities under the Ugu District, voting stations will open from 07:00 to 21:00.
He added that the outcome of the elections will be declared by the CEO of the Electoral Commission three days later.
“We are pleading with all registered voters to vote. Political parties and independent candidates must also adhere to the Code of Conduct they signed,” said Msomi.
