Ugu detectives secure convictions
According to police, the 58-year-old assaulted Bhengu at a pub in Umtentweni on October 21, 2023.
A man who was accused of assaulting Lungelo Bhengu during a Rugby World Cup match in Umtentweni in 2023 was recently sentenced.
The Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court sentenced 58-year-old Johan Victor to a R6 000 fine or 12 months imprisonment and an additional 12 months imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years.
Victor was sentenced on May 9 after being charged with assault to do grievous bodily harm.
The incident occurred at a pub in Umtentweni on October 21, 2023.
In November 2023, the EFF in Ugu had released a statement calling for Victor’s arrest. The party alleged that Bhengu was watching a Springboks semi-final match with his friends and girlfriend when the incident happened.
The investigating officer in the case was Detective Sergeant Morne Jones of Port Shepstone Detective Service.
In another case, the Scottburgh Regional Court recently sentenced Nkanyiso Dlamini to 10 years imprisonment for murder, with two terms of three years each for possession of ammunition and an unlicensed firearm.
“The sentences are to run concurrently. He shot a 12-year-old victim at a tavern in November 2021 in Scottburgh and remained in custody throughout his trial.”
The investigating officer in the case was Detective Warrant Officer Njabulo Latha.
Also, police said 26-year-old Arnold Anele Ngilande was recently convicted and sentenced for the murder of a 63-year-old woman in Nkampini.
In a statement, police said Ngilande stabbed the woman seven times before she succumbed to her injuries at Gcilima Clinic in June 2023.
Ngilande was sentenced in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court to 15 years imprisonment, of which three years was suspended.
He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The investigating officer in the case was Detective Sergeant Sbonelo Mlambo of Margate Detective Service.
