Bathing banned at certain beaches

Thousands of gannets were seen ‘raining’ from the sky while the humpback whales were spotted breaching.

At first light on Tuesday morning this week, the KZN Sharks Board’s meshing team from Glenmore reported a strong smell of sardines and, shortly afterwards, at least 3 000 common dolphins off the lighthouse area at Port Edward.

Thousands of gannets were seen ‘raining’ from the sky while the humpback whales were spotted breaching.

Wayne Harrison, Area Operations Manager at KZN Sharks Board, said the ‘Greatest Shoal on Earth’ is now well and truly in local waters.

“The views are spectacular, and this is the moment in time that you want to be out there viewing the Sardine Run,” he said.

Bathing has been banned from Port Edward to Umtentweni.

However, bathing is open at the following beaches: Southport, Sunwich Port, Banana Beach, Umzumbe, Hibberdene, Karridene, Winklespruit, Warner Beach and Amanzimtoti main beach.
