Debt relief for Harding residents
Through this programme customers are expected to make a once-off payment of 60% of the capital debt before October 31, 2024 and the municipality will write off the remaining 40% debt that has accrued on the account.
Umuziwabantu Local Municipality has introduced a debt relief programme aimed at allowing high-owing debtors to pay off their debts through a once-off amnesty on debt programme.
The programme is aimed at encouraging municipal consumers to settle their debts which will benefit the residents and businesses of Umuziwabantu.
The municipal council resolved to introduce the once-off amnesty on debt programme following the increasing year-on-year debtors’ book.
Through this programme, customers are expected to make a once-off payment of 60% of the capital debt before October 31, 2024, and the municipality will write off the remaining 40% debt that has accrued on the account.
Umuziwabantu Municipality Mayor Sboniso Zungu said: “We introduced the once-off amnesty on debt programme because the outstanding debt is currently sitting at more than R36m. We needed to come up with a tangible solution to recover what is owed to the municipality and also provide relief to our consumers. The municipality has embarked on different strategies to recover what is owed to it; such as the disconnection of services for non-payment, however, the debt owed has not been reduced hence we have decided to introduce this programme. We remain hopeful that we will be able to encourage debtors to pay off their debts,” he said.
