Pageant hopeful aims to uplift youth

A total of 28 people participated but Nkosinathi Mkhize was named best rapper while Sbonelo Khusi was named best singer.

Miss KZN Queen hopeful Precious Shabane recently organised the Voice of KwaNzimakwe song and rap competition to give young people a platform to work on their craft.

The 23-year-old is a finalist in the Miss KZN Queen 2024.

She explained that she embarked on the singing and rapping competition after seeing the talent in KwaNzimakwe and how the youth lacked platforms to showcase their skills and network.

A total of 28 people participated; Nkosinathi Mkhize was named best rapper, while Sbonelo Khusi was named best singer.

Participants walked away with certificates and medals while the winners bagged special awards and prizes.

Shabane said after the competition, young people were inspired to start writing and recording music again and collaborating as local artists.

She added that the competition reminded them of their talents, to keep working on their craft and that they are bigger than the background they come from.

Gunning for the Miss KZN Queen crown, Shabane said should she win, she would use the title to urge young people to start their own businesses and not rely on school or a nine-to-five job for a living.

She explained that her passion for modelling started after she entered Queen of High Schools. Although she was not great during that competition, it inspired her to pursue pageant crowns.

The former Mashosha High School learner said she has always been inspired by former Miss South Africa and former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, who teaches young girls to be leaders and to find their space in society.

“I saw a space in my community; I took it and turned it into a platform for aspiring artists to work on their craft. I studied towards a Diploma in Sustainable Horticulture and Landscaping at the Durban University of Technology, and now I own a company called Ginyitshe Projects. I also have a registered non-profit organisation, Uvumile Community Care Centre, where I host pageants, charity events, youth empowerment programmes and more,” she said, adding that she would like to use what she has to uplift the community.
