Man’s leg broken during alleged assault
Cele says he asked them for a search warrant but none was produced.
Police in Scottburgh are investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after Zethembe Cele of KwaDweshula was allegedly assaulted by Saps members in Mehlomnyama recently.
Cele broke his leg and sustained bruises and injuries on his hands.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident in which a 41-year-old man was allegedly beaten up in Mehlomnyama on election day (May 29).
According to Cele, he was in Mehlomnyama when the police stopped him and told him that they had received a tip-off that the car he was driving had firearms.
He asked them for a search warrant, but none was produced.
“They searched my car and found nothing; they then beat me up in front of people without any reason.”
He alleged the police had called for backup, and more members arrived and then arrested him.
“I was released the next day, and I then opened a case against them. I had difficulty opening a case in Mehlomnyama.”
He eventually opened a case a few days later.
