Protecting the nature reserves of the sea
Founder of MPA Day, Dr Judy Mann, said protecting the biodiversity of the incredible marine life is impossible when done by a few people.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are set to be given the attention they deserve as August 1st marked the fourth annual MPA Day.
Ocean enthusiasts worldwide dedicated the day to protecting the ‘nature reserves of the sea’.
Founder of MPA Day, Dr Judy Mann, said protecting the biodiversity of the incredible marine life is impossible when done by a few people.
Mann, the executive of strategic projects at the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, said this as several MPA Day celebrations will be held worldwide.
On the South Coast, the Rocky Shores Explore will take people on a walk from the ‘Big Fish’ to the local Rocky Shores, exploring and learning about the nearby MPA that many people don’t know about.
It will be held at the Aliwal Shoal MPA – Mzimayi River to Illovo River on August 1 from 05:30 to 15:30.
“From the first event in 2021, we cannot believe how MPA Day has grown, and this is all because of the concern and compassion of our global citizens for the health of our ocean. We need everyone coming together across the globe to celebrate, learn, and share our ocean for the sake of all life on Earth, the people of today and for our future generations,” said Mann.
She added that there are many planned in-person events and activities, as well as virtual MPA Day tours, webinars, and more, to build awareness of the special places.
