Nature celebrated on Mandela Day

Woodcrest Academy in Sezela celebrated Nelson Mandela’s birthday honouring his significant impact on South Africa’s history and reflecting on his values and principles.
Tata Madiba had a deep respect for nature, and in his history-making inauguration speech of 1994, he said: “Each time one of us touches the soil of this land, we feel a sense of personal renewal… We are moved by a sense of joy and exhilaration when the grass turns green and the flowers bloom.”
Mandela expressed concerns about air pollution, and the school noted that everyone can be proud of the environmental rights that are enshrined in our country’s constitution: “Everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being, and to have that environment protected, for the benefit of present and future generations.”
Taking all of this into consideration this year, Woodcrest Academy celebrated Mandela Day through the theme of Earth Care: What can we do on a small scale to improve the world around us?
Learners engaged in various activities related to the benefits one derives from plants and trees.
They learned how trees purify the air, reduce heat, filter water and produce oxygen; they planted seeds and seedlings of food plants such as carrots, beans, leeks and tomatoes; they examined medicinal plants and learnt about traditional ways in which they are used to enhance human health, and they planted food-bearing trees such as avocados.
Well done to the children. Everyone has a role to play in appreciating and nurturing the environment.
