Revellers enjoy Maskandi festival

The organisers of the Ugu Maskandi Festival said although the event has not reached the level they want, however, the event is growing.

Lovers of the Ugu Maskandi Festival enjoyed performances by big artists such as Igcokama Elisha, Phuzekhemisi, Bahubhe and more at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last weekend.

Now in its fourth edition, the festival is organised by Ugu Broadcasting Services (UBS) and was first held at the Harding Sports Ground.

UBS spokesperson Melusi Khwela said the support shown was more than expected.

He said that the event was growing every year, saying that they have given themselves a challenge to keep at it to entertain people.

“Although the event has not reached the level we want, it is growing yearly. Eventually, we want it to be compared to international events. We host it in Heritage Month to bring people together,” said Khwela.

He explained that the festival had surprises. “People are used to the fact that it always rains on the day of the festival. However, this time, it did not rain, the event went on smoothly, and people were happy,” he continued.

Other Maskandi artists that performed included Menzi, Bingelela, Skweletu, Matollgate, Mayoghurt, Umphuphe, Magazi, Mjolisi, Ijadu, Ithwasa Lekansela, Umfaz’ogcwele and many more.

Nkosinathi Makhanya ‘uMfaz’ogcwele’ performs at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.
