Men’s forum bring smiles to school children
Officials dug deep into their pockets as this initiative was not from department's budget.
The men’s forum from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in Kokstad recently donated gift packs of toiletries to Westlands Primary School.
Bongumusa Mngomezulu, the acting area commissioner of Kokstad Management Area, said the correctional officers took it upon themselves to do good in the community they are servicing.
“Officials dug deep into their pockets as this initiative was not from the department’s budget. This might not be big enough, but we believe it will make a difference,” he said.
He urged children not to bunk classes and motivated them by telling them he saw a bright future ahead, with the possibility of becoming the doctors and pilots of tomorrow.
It was not the first time the school has been visited; it has previously received donations of toiletries and uniforms.
Bonginkosi Mbotshwa, the department’s communication officer, said the forum had helped build classrooms at schools and houses for the frail and destitute.
“We do this, heeding the call that was made by our department where it says we must always maintain that we make a difference in the communities that we service,” he said.
Nonkululeko Thambo, principal of Westlands Primary, said the school has 122 learners from Grade 1 to Grade 7.
She thanked the forum and said the school did not anticipate that it would be such an auspicious event.
Children smiled from ear to ear when receiving the gift packs while the correctional officials broke out with some boisterous song items to provide some entertainment.
