Rural schools receive state-of-the-art libraries

These key facilities were built as a result of a donation from the NPC Community Trust to assist the Department of Education.

Two schools, KwaLuhlaza Primary in Murchison and Mkhandi Primary in KwaNyuswa, recently celebrated the opening of state-of-the-art libraries.

These key facilities were built as a result of a donation from the NPC Community Trust to assist the Department of Education in bridging the backlog with regard to the provision of libraries in rural schools.

Mkhandi Primary’s principal, Nokuthula Nzama, said she was excited about the library, as she recalled that the school was built from scratch with community donations.

“There was no school here; children travelled long distances to the school where I was teaching in 1993. The principal and parents lobbied for this school, and it was built in 1994,” said Nzama.

Nzama said that at the time, she was appointed to drive the project with the community that rallied behind it, and classes were built with no government funding. “The government only built ablution facilities. Now that we have a library, I have fulfilled my mission, and I am looking forward to retirement. I wish my successor to elevate the school into a rural college,” she added.

NPC North Coast Community Trust chairperson Mhlengi Gumede said a decision was taken to invest in primary education to improve learning and reading for learners.

“We are installing libraries in our schools. We ask you to take care of these libraries and use them to read books and do your research,” said Gumede.

The Department of Education’s GT Msomi welcomed the NPC partnership and thanked the Trust for its donation of libraries, saying that this will go a long way in transforming learners’ education for the better.

NPC Huaxin’s spokesperson, Smangele Tshabalala, said this endeavour is part of the company’s corporate social investment programme to improve the education of learners in their local communities. “It’s our social and labour plans. So, we need to invest in our social future and take care of our communities,” said Tshabalala.

Department of Education officials and NPC community Trust members open a new library at KwaLuhlaza Primary in Murchison.
