Young artist to exhibit at Margate Museum
Ayanda Khweshube received exhibition space, incumbent on him preparing a substantial body of work by November 20.
Promising fine artist Ayanda Khweshube (22) recently landed an opportunity to exhibit his latest work at the Margate Art Museum.
The opportunity came about after the chairperson of the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa in Ugu and curator at the Margate Art Museum, Siya Sotsu, visited his workshop.
Currently studying Arts and Design at the Esayidi TVET College in Gamalakhe, Khweshube turned a single room he rents into an art studio, where he also lives.
Sotsu said despite limited resources, Khweshube’s dedication and resilience shine through the pieces he makes.
He said the young artist expressed his desire to showcase his work at the Margate Art Museum.
“Recognising his potential, we agreed to provide him with exhibition space, incumbent on him preparing a substantial body of work by November 20. In celebration of Ayanda’s birthday (December 16) and artistic journey, the exhibition will not only showcase his work but will also feature pieces by his fellow artists, offering a unique display of young talent in the region,” he said.
In addition to the exhibition, added Sotsu, Khweshube will soon join the mentorship programme led by the legendary Ben Nsusha at the South Coast Art Business Incubator NPC.
Sotsu said the development of the cultural and creative sector, supported by the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Arts and Culture Department, aimed to nurture and guide emerging artists, providing them with invaluable skills, insights, and networks needed to succeed in the competitive art world.
“Ayanda’s story is a testament to the power of passion, courage, and community support. His work, created in a modest studio, speaks to his drive and ambition, and he is on a promising path to making a significant impact in the arts,” he said.
He added the community is encouraged to support emerging artists in the region.
