Rugby awards for Warriors
The players can enjoy a long rest before getting going again next year.
It’s that time of year when the rugby world dishes out its annual awards. Springbok flank Pieter-Steph du Toit was named the player of the year, and rightly so, despite some tough competition from fellow Bok nominees lock Eben Etzebeth and Cheslin Kolbe wing, and Irish 8th man Caelan Doris.
Rassie Erasmus did not win the coach of the year, that award going to Jerome Daret, who led France to Sevens gold at the Paris Olympics. (You’re entitled to disagree, of course.)
All Blacks Wallace Sititi (loose forward) was named breakthrough player of the year, edging out Springboks flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, whose season was cut short due to injury.
Closer to home, the South Coast Warriors held their annual prize-giving recently, with various players receiving awards.
Jason Kobben was named player of the year, also being the most improved.
Jason played flank and lock for the team during the season. Club chairman Niko Potgieter commended him for his massive work rate, with his superior fitness certainly playing a part in this.
