Rain increases pothole peril on R102 stretch from Port Shepstone to Umtentweni
Many sections of the road are riddled with potholes and pools of water.
Heavy rains this week have worsened the condition of the R102 from the Mzimkhulu River bridge to Rethman Drive in Umtentweni.
Many sections are riddled with potholes and pools of water, to the frustration of motorists.
“Unfortunately the recent rains have severely damaged the road creating hazardous driving conditions. To date we have not received any feedback from DoT. DoT and the contractor, Jamjo Civils were in final stages of their protracted negotiations, but we are still waiting. The Port Shepstone office of the DoT has undertaken to maintain the section of the R102 from Rethman Drive to the bridge to the best of their ability. They now have to wait for the rain to stop to grade and make the surface smooth again,” said Ward 16 councillor, John Williams,
The rehabilitation and resurfacing of the first section of the R102 started in May 2025 and has now hit a dead-end with little feedback from DoT.
Meanwhile, bridge jacking preparations have commenced on the bridge. Repairs to the bridge are expected to be completed later this year.
