‘It’s checkmate’ – was shouted out many times – during the inaugural Swim Chess Open tournament held last Saturday.
The Sifiso and William Chess Academy made history by hosting the Swim Chess Open tournament at St Martin de Porres Comprehensive School in Port Shepstone.
This groundbreaking event drew 144 chess players from across KwaZulu-Natal, underscoring the region’s burgeoning interest in chess.
The tournament’s success was bolstered by the presence of Mntomuhle Khawula, MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, who praised the event’s inclusivity and community engagement.
Khawula pledged his department’s full support for next year’s event, including financial and resource backing, to accommodate more participants.
Key supporters of the event included the local organising committee, Port Shepstone Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, parents and siblings, Port Shepstone Saps and Ugu Chess Association, which provided administrative assistance.
Sifiso Xulu, Daleen Meyer and Chantelle van Biljon from the local organising committee extended their gratitude to every person who played a pivotal role in the tournament. “This support demonstrates a remarkable commitment to the academy.”
The committee congratulated the winners of the Swim Chess Open 2024 tournament and thanked all the sponsors for making it possible.
