Publication of matric results put on ice
A court decision will clarify whether the 2024 matric results will be published or not.
It is still unclear whether the 2024 matric results will be published next week.
With the results expected to be released between January 13 and 14, the Information Regulator (IR) is stirring the pot, demanding the results stay private.
The North Gauteng High Court saw the IR and the Department of Basic Education clash on Tuesday this week.
In 2022, the same court insisted the department publicly release the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam results.
However, the IR is back, pushing to keep the awaited results out of the newspapers this year, citing privacy concerns.
They argued that the department should use SMS notifications to deliver results directly to learners, respecting their right to privacy.
The department countered, saying the urgency claimed by the IR is unfounded.
The matter is still in court and not finalised.
Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education announced that it was busy with delivering Learning and Teaching Support Materials in preparation for the 2025 academic year.
MEC Sipho Hlomuka said as from January 7, they had successfully delivered almost 99% of textbooks to schools across the province.
He said they also delivered 76% of stationery benefitting learners in 4 174 schools.
He added that the delivery process is to be completed by January 10.
Hlomuka said due to serious security challenges at certain schools, delivery to these affected areas will be undertaken between January 12 and 17.
The MEC said the department was working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of both personnel and resources during this period.
He said the department was actively addressing issues related to the norms and standards allocation to ensure that all learning environments are equipped to provide quality education.
He added that no learner will be left behind.
”We are focused on delivering the necessary resources to enable teaching and learning on the first day of school. Our priority remains the success and well-being of every learner in KZN,” he said.
