Ndovela family holds maidens ceremony

Elders from the family thanked the young girls for their maturity and for showing the necessary respect for the family and their community.

A large crowd of community members, along with the Ndovela family, their relatives and friends, gathered at their home at Xolobeni rural village in Bizana to celebrate the coming of age, maturing or adulthood of their girls recently.

The maidens ceremony was embraced by the family’s elderly men and women, as well as the maidens themselves. The event marked the entering of the maidens to various stages of growth and doing the right things as mature adults.

This event is part of the cultural activities practised by the Ndovela families to raise young girls with respect and to request their ancestors and God to bless them with all the fortunes they pray for as they enter into adulthood.

Family spokesperson Ginisile Ndovela said this is a cultural practice of the Ndovela families to raise their girls with respect for ancestors, God, and the community as they develop into mature girls.

“We encourage them to behave well as they develop into adulthood. Through this ceremony, we ask ancestors and God to unleash the girls’ potential in life and bless them with all they aspire to achieve as grownups. For all the six maidens, the family slaughtered four cows, several goats and six sheep for visitors to enjoy plenty of meat during this celebration,” said Ndovela.

Ndovela thanked all the family members for the successful maidens’ ceremony. “Our gratitude also goes to all the community members, friends, relatives, girls from the community and all who graced our maidens ceremony. All visitors and crowds were well-behaved, so we are so thankful,” said Ndovela.
