New chapter for head of creatives industry
The Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa implemented initiatives that amplified the voices of artists and addressed pressing economic issues affecting the creative industry in the Ugu district.
Margate Art Museum curator Siya Sotsu has stepped down as the chairperson of the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA) in the Ugu district.
Sotsu will be joining Vaal University of Technology’s advisory committee to focus on community development within the creative arts sector.
The art curator said that during his tenure as chairperson of CCIFSA, he made significant strides in fostering cultural and creative development in the community.
He said he had the privilege of working alongside talented individuals dedicated to nurturing and supporting local artists across all genres.
Also, he added initiatives implemented amplified the artists’ voices and addressed pressing economic issues affecting them in the district.
Sotsu said the federation focused on the development of structured support systems that fostered artistic growth.
“The support systems include workshops, mentorship programmes, and opportunities for local artists to showcase their work, empowering them to pursue their passions while generating income. By creating platforms for collaboration and networking, we provided a fertile ground for creativity to flourish, positively impacting the local economy and enhancing the cultural landscape of our district,” said Sotsu.
He said he was proud of their efforts to engage with diverse artistic expressions, from visual to performing arts, ensuring every genre had a space and platform to thrive.
In joining the higher learning institution, Sotsu said the new responsibility allows him to extend his commitment to supporting artists and enriching communities through innovative educational programmes and collaborative projects.
”I am enthusiastic about the potential to bridge the gap between academic pursuits and practical artistic development, ensuring that our local artists are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a rapidly changing environment. While I may be moving on to this new endeavour, I remain deeply committed to the vision of the CCIFSA Ugu district and the incredible community we have built. I am grateful for the support and collaboration I have received from all, and I encourage you to continue championing the cause of cultural and creative development,” he said, adding that the future is bright for local artists.
Sotsu added: “Let us continue to uplift and empower the voices of our artists, ensuring that the cultural fabric of Ugu remains vibrant and resilient. Together, we can build a future where art serves as both a reflection of our identity and a driver of economic growth.”
