Margate resident advises how to get a new Sassa card

Johan Steyn from Margate did some homework (many phone calls and enquiries) on getting the new Social Security Agency of South Africa (Sassa) card.

Steyn is sharing this information to help pensioners on the South Coast get their new cards with less hassle.

The new Sassa black cards are only available at Boxer stores in Gamalakhe and Izingolweni, or you can use your personal bank; however, you need a confirmation letter/three months’ bank statements and must get the form from the Sassa office or download it.

Option one:
The gold and white Sassa card needs to be changed to the black Postbank Sassa card before February 28. This can be done at the Boxer store in Gamalakhe; however, you need to take your ID and the old gold and White Sassa card.

Option 2:
You can have your money put into your bank account. You need to go to your bank for the bank option form, which the bank must stamp and also give you three months’ bank statements of your account. Then go to a Sassa office with these documents – the bank form and bank statement, ID and a copy of your ID, proof of residential address (not older than three months) and any other personal documents, just in case they might ask for something else.

Once the process is finished at the Sassa office, you ask for a confirmation letter as this will be your only proof that you are a Sassa beneficiary, as you will not have a Sassa card to use anymore.

You will then use your bank card and bank pin to draw your money.

Both of these options, whichever you choose, need to be done before February 28, as the old gold and white Sassa card will not work from March 1, no matter the expiry date on your gold and white Sassa card.

The new black Sassa card has Postbank printed on it, and it’s the only valid card. No other black card is valid for the purpose of your Sassa money.
