R1.5m reward for Umzumbe Municipality
Umzumbe Municipality is one of seven municipalities in the province that will receive over a million rand from Cogta.
Umzumbe Local Municipality will receive R1.5m from the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) for its prudent use of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).
It’s the only local municipality in the Ugu District to benefit, and also one of only seven municipalities in the province which will receive over a million rand each from Cogta.
KZN Cogta MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, said the good performance resulted in an additional allocation of funding totalling R30m.
He said the allocation is intended to improve access to basic services such as roads, water and sanitation within these municipalities.
The other beneficiary municipalities are: Umgungundlovu District Municipality – R10m, Zululand District Municipality – R6m, Ulundi Municipality – R3m, Okhahlamba Municipality – R1.5m, Greater Kokstad Municipality – R7m, and uBuhlebezwe Municipality – R1.5m.
Buthelezi emphasised the importance of prudent financial management and the diligent execution of infrastructure projects in fostering sustainable development and improving the quality of life for all residents of the province.
He said the success of the seven municipalities served as an encouraging example for others to emulate.
Meanwhile, comment from Umzumbe on how it plans to use its allocation had not been received at the time of going to press.
