Education department awards Ugu for excellence
The KZN Department of Education urged the Ugu District to continue focusing on literacy, numeracy, and boosting Bachelor's passes to ensure learners compete globally.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education recognised the outstanding performance of schools in the Ugu District in the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last week.
The glamorous event was attended by department officials such as Mbongiseni Mazibuko, Thami Mbanjwa, Thembelihle Gumede, Sindi Zakuza-Njakazi, Nkosinathi Madadi, Bongiwe Ntombela, teachers and principals.
Speaking at the gathering, Ugu acting district director Nkosinathi Madadi described the region as a disciplined district.
The Ugu District achieved a 91.7% pass rate and placed second in the province.
Out of 10 638 candidates, 9 758 passed, with over 6 000 obtaining Bachelor’s passes.
The district exceeded the provincial Mathematics target with a 78% pass rate and attained 85% in Physical Sciences.
All circuits achieved above 80%, with 25 schools attaining a 100% pass rate.
“We pride ourselves on having played a significant role in stabilising the system. We have also been able to bridge the divide between rural and urban school performance. To all teachers, thank you for your selfless sacrifice,” said Madadi.
Also, the deputy director-general for curriculum management, Mbongiseni Mazibuko, congratulated the district on its 91.7% pass rate and urged continued focus on literacy, numeracy, and boosting Bachelor’s passes to ensure learners compete globally.
Meanwhile, the head of department, Nkosinathi Ngcobo, praised the district for surpassing the 90% mark, acknowledged the efforts of past and present leaders, and commended teachers as ‘the backbone of the system’ whose sacrifices are deeply valued.
