Dialogue to mark importance of Pride Month
The Mkholombe dialogue will be a build-up to a bigger celebration in Durban on Saturday, June 14 – eThekwini Pride.
With June being International Pride Month, the Lower South Coast LGBTQI Community Project will host a dialogue at the Mkholombe Community Hall today, June 11 from 10:00.
The founder of the project, Zinhle Ndimeni, said Pride Month commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community.
Ndimeni said the Mkholombe dialogue will be a build-up to a bigger celebration in Durban on Saturday, June 14 – eThekwini Pride.
The Durban celebration will also be supported by South Coasters such as actress Nozuko Ntshangase and television personality Leon Payn.
Recently, Ntshangase and Payn hosted a social media live discussion under the topic Dressing Your Truth, as a build-up to eThekwini Pride.
Ntshangase is from Gamalakhe, and Payn is from Harding. Their discussion focused on fashion, expression and queer joy.
Meanwhile, Ndimeni said it was important for South Coasters to be part of eThekwini Pride because it is a landmark event that will gather community members, allies, and advocates united to celebrate love, identity, and inclusion in all its glorious forms.
She said they have organised transport from Port Shepstone to Durban for local LGBTQI members who would love to celebrate with them in Durban.
“eThekwini Pride is aimed at cultivating a safe and inviting atmosphere for LGBTQI individuals, promoting awareness, acceptance, and robust advocacy. Attendees can look forward to an action-packed day featuring a parade bursting with colour, electrifying live performances, and rich cultural showcases that together foster a sense of unity and emphasise the critical importance of equal rights for all,” she said.
Meanwhile, the eThekwini Pride team described it as something more powerful than a celebration.
“Pride is a movement. We are uniting to elevate voices, educate communities, and pave the way for a future where everyone, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live freely and authentically. As a powerful commitment to inclusivity and human rights, local government officials, businesses, and community groups have rallied behind this initiative, showing overwhelming support,” she said.
eThekwini Pride is poised to attract hundreds of enthusiastic participants from across the province and beyond, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance.
