Women’s rugby club seeks players

Newly established women’s rugby club, the Eagle Queens, is looking for more players.

Last year, the club received a thumbs-up from the KZN Rugby Union (KZNRU) to participate in the 2025 KZNRU Women’s First Division South League.

Eagle Queens head coach, Philasande Prince Ntshangase, said the age requirement is over 18.

Ntshangase said the Eagle Queens’ next game will be against the Black Panthers at the Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds this Saturday (14th).

“Most of the women only started practising and playing this year; however, it has been their long time dream to play rugby, but they didn’t have the platform on the South Coast. I have been working closely with other respected rugby clubs like the Gamalakhe Black Bulls and the Amangcesha Rugby Club, where they also have great input in getting players from different locations to join the women’s team,” he said.

He added although they have been receiving support from the sub-union and its president, the team still needs rugby boots, socks and transport for away games, which are mostly played in Durban.

Ntshangase said they would love to honour the games and play the whole league without missing a single game.

He added that practise sessions have been difficult since the players live in different areas.

“It is a challenge to practise as a team, so I have to travel to these different areas to coach them separately. When they can, they contribute money to hire a taxi so that we can practise as a team,” he said.

Ntshangase said the public can assist the club by encouraging young women interested in playing rugby to join the team.

He said the club would also appreciate donations in the form of rugby boots and socks.

“We would also appreciate it if the public could come and watch our practise sessions at the Margate Sports School and in game days,” he said.
