Praise for sold-out Ugu Jazz Festival
More than 2 000 fans attended the relaunch of one of the South Coast’s signature events on the national entertainment calendar.
One of South Africa’s most talented vocalists, Zonke Dikana, performed at a sold-out Ugu Jazz Festival at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe last Saturday, reminding fans of what they had missed during the five-year hiatus of the event.
More than 2 000 fans attended the relaunch of one of the South Coast’s signature events on the national entertainment calendar.
For the festival, the organisers erected a gigantic dome marquee, which was packed to capacity.
They said they appreciated patrons for showing up in large numbers.
“We had anticipated a low turnout given the short time we had to put everything together, and that it was just a relaunch. It shows that people had been patiently waiting for the festival’s revival. The real work begins now. We will take all the feedback we’ve received and use it to prepare for 2026,” they said.
Zonke, who had the audience singing along to her timeless songs, shared the stage with serial hit-maker Ami Faku.
Also performing were Mondli Ngcobo, DJ Happy Gal, DJ Bruce, Tender Mavundla, Umkhumbane Jazz Ensemble, DJ 101, Slwane, and many others.
Jazz legend Dr Madala Kunene was honoured with a R50 000 cheque from the KZN Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
“I have been honoured in the past, but this is the first time the award comes with a cash prize. I would like to thank the organisers and the KZN government. As we close Youth Month, I’d like to plead with the youth to respect their elders, and men never to abuse women,” said Kunene.
Hosting duties were handled by popular Gagasi FM personalities Felix Hlophe, Siphokuhle Luthuli, and Mkay Music, who kept the energy high and the audience engaged throughout the event.
