Sewer system upgrade for Harding
Overall it will benefit some 185 homes and 100 businesses, municipal and government institutions.
Harding has had sewage issues due to manholes flooding in the town and a vandalised non-operational pump station near the N2.
This pump station collects 90% of the waste from the CBD and the western part of Harding.
Ugu District Municipality will now implement the replacement and refurbishment of sewer pipeline infrastructure for Harding town.
Ugu mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi and Umuziwabantu mayor Siboniso Zungu recently attended a sod turning to start the project.
According to Mqadi, this upgrade will not only help Harding, but the surrounding areas as well.
“It will benefit 185 suburban homes on the west of the town and some 100 businesses, municipal and government institutions in the CBD. This project is labour-intensive due to the nature of the work, therefore the Expanded Public Works Programme principles will be applied to suitable portions of the work.”
Also, the wastewater treatment works has mechanical problems due to some non-operational systems.
Mqadi said its refurbishment is vital to improve its operational capacity to ensure that it meets the green drop requirements.
He added that the upgrade will create economic development and enhance quality of life for people living and working in the district, Harding in particular.
