Umzumbe addresses service delivery issues
Eskom will conduct an audit in Ward 16 to inspect illegal connections.
From water shortages, power outages, to poor roads, Ward 16 under Umzumbe Municipality has been in need of an intervention.
Addressing some of these concerns, Umzumbe mayor Bongani Nyuswa visited the Ward 16 MPCC hall on Tuesday last week to present community development plans.
Last month, residents in this community requested that the municipality look into the condition of the roads, the lack of water and electricity infrastructure.
Speaking to residents, Nyuswa said when it comes to water, Ugu District Municipality reported that three boreholes would be constructed, and that there were plans to install 20 standpipes throughout the ward.
He said residents are asked to be patient for three months, so that the projects can be implemented properly.
He added that when it comes to the roads, Umzumbe Municipality’s road construction programme will continue in the ward.
“It has been planned that the infrastructure repair machine will return on July 21. During this financial year, the Inamandla Access Road will be constructed,” he said.
Nyuswa said after engaging with Eskom, the power utility plans to conduct an audit in Ward 16 to inspect illegal connections.
“Eskom also wants to inspect the areas where transformers have been reported to be faulty, especially the transformer supplying the Velumemeze School, which is a challenge when power outages affect a school. The municipality is still awaiting the Department of Electricity and Energy to review the application for the installation of electricity infrastructure for the Velumemeze Electrification Project,” he said.
