Gamalakhe gogos enjoy football trip
The team is made up of players aged 60 and above.
It was a weekend to remember for Gamalakhe Senior Citizens who participated in the Four Team Tournament in Richards Bay last Saturday.
The 15 grannies, together with seven technical and management staff spent the weekend enjoying the beautiful game of football. The results did not favour them, but they say they learnt a lot when it comes to the game.
Coordinator, Thuli Memela, said they took this trip as a cluster team comprising of players from Wards 5, 26 and 28 (all from Gamalakhe).
She said the team is made up of players aged 60 and above and has at least 85 members. She said they not only play football, but netball, juskei, ball passing, and more.
About the games, she said she thought they played well, regardless of the results. “We played very well. When we left here, we left as a cluster team. What I realised is that we need more specific training,” said Memela.
Memela said they were lucky to have an energetic goalkeeper in Dudu Phungula.
She said they need to be coached according to where in the field players are playing, like strikers’ coach, midfielders’ coach, defenders’ coach and goalkeeper’s coach.
Their matches ended in 0-0 draw against eSikhawini and Ugu respectively and a 6-0 loss against Durban Girls. Memela thanks the sponsors who made the trip possible.
