Shelter receives essential supplies
Mmabatho Tembe, the deputy speaker of the KZN Legislature distributed dignity packs, cleaning supplies, and blankets to bring comfort and dignity to survivors.
To show solidarity and compassion to women and children who are survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), the deputy speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Mmabatho Tembe, visited the Siyamthanda Shelter in Gcilima on Tuesday last week.
As part of the visit, Tembe distributed dignity packs, cleaning supplies and blankets to bring comfort to survivors on their journey of healing.
The deputy speaker explained that the shelter plays a vital role in the Ugu District, offering protective shelter, immediate support and psychosocial services. It also provides counselling to women and children who are victims of domestic violence, rape, sexual abuse and other traumatic experiences.
“Their mission is not only to respond to crises, but to empower survivors and create safe spaces where they can rebuild their lives. They also raise awareness about domestic violence, sexual abuse and other forms of trauma, hold prevention programmes to reduce incidents of abuse, and equip volunteers and local organisations with skills in victim empowerment and trauma counselling,” she said.
She added that the shelter also provides holistic, community-based support, including assistance for health-related challenges such as HIV/Aids and TB.
Tembe said she would be visiting other women’s shelters in August, offering comfort and encouragement.
