Police raid Ugu district

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said two firearms were recovered during Operation Shanela.

Ugu police commissioner Major General Sethenya Nxamagele said the district has a serious problem with firearms that are being used for house and business robberies, and hijackings.

Nxamagele was speaking at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre ahead of Operation Shanela II last Friday.

The operation was led by KwaZulu-Natal deputy commissioner, Major General Phumelele Makoba.

Makoba said this was a multi-disciplinary operation, involving sister departments such as law enforcement, immigration, and others.

She said the operation aimed to prevent, combat and investigate crime.

“Some detectives are tracking and tracing suspects who have been terrorising the community. Roadblocks are part of the operation. Members must know that roadblocks are not only for Road Traffic Act transgressions. When we conduct roadblocks, we look for illegal firearms, drugs, suspects, and everything that is not supposed to be in our communities,” said Makoba.

She added that because 200 police officers were part of Operation Shanela, she was hoping for 200 arrests.

Meanwhile, Nxamangele said the aim was to rid the streets of criminals.

“Due to the manpower we have today, we hope that at the end of this operation, most of the illegal firearms will be collected with criminals being put behind bars,” she said.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said two firearms were recovered during Operation Shanela.

“Two suspects were arrested in connection with rape. Drugs were also recovered, and a vehicle was taken off the road after it was found to be unroadworthy. A shop selling goods illegally was also closed,” he said.
