58 arrested for drunk driving in Margate

The cases have been postponed, pending blood results and forensic testing.

A road block carried out by the KZN Department of Transport’s Road Traffic Inspectorate, Saps, National Traffic Police and Ray Nkonyeni Law Enforcement saw 58 motorists nabbed for drunk driving in Margate and surrounding areas recently.

Among those arrested were a 74-year-old grandfather, a chartered accountant, a paramedic, a manager for a security company at a municipality.

According to the department, the security company manager resisted arrest, but was locked up.

The cases have been postponed, pending blood results and forensic testing.

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma maintains a zero-tolerance policy, promising continued crackdowns. “Authorities have reported a significant drop in road accidents. We appreciate the collaboration with the National Traffic Police and Ray Nkonyeni Law Enforcement.”

The department added that drunk driving remains one of the leading contributors of fatal crashes in the province, particularly at weekends, peak travel periods and holidays. Also, sustained enforcement, visible policing and arrests are critical to changing driver behaviour.

Since mid-August 2025, more than 2600 motorists have been arrested in the province as part of the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation targeting reckless driving.
