Teen girl found dead in Umzumbe River

Snethemba Ngcobo's body was found 3km from her home.

The family of Snethemba Ngcobo (18) of Magog whose body was found floating in the Umzumbe River on January 15, several kilometres from their home, is looking for answers to her disappearance and subsequent death.

They only realised that she was not at home when her alarm did not go off that morning.

Snethemba Ngcobo.

Her distraught brother, Musa Slangwe, added the family is still confused as to what happened to his sister.
They only realised something was amiss when they received a call from a local resident to go the river.

It is believed when her body was found, her one eye had been gouged.

Slangwe believes she could have walked to the river 3km away in the early hours of the morning without anyone in the family noticing.

Musa Slangwe, Snethemba Ngcobo’s brother, said his family is in shock.

He added that she had been having ‘spiritual challenges’ the previous evening and told the family she was tired and needed to rest.

Ward 15 councillor Sfundo Ngwane said the incident has shocked the community, as nothing like this has happened in the last 10 years.

He said questions are being asked because Ngcobo’s body was found in a shallow section of the river.
“Our hearts are sore and our minds are confused because no one can actually tell us what happened to this young girl.

Also, as the community, we don’t want to assume, but rather leave everything in the hands of the law.”

The body was removed by a Saps Search and Rescue team and taken to the state mortuary for a post-mortem.

Police were contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
