Gamalakhe gospel star switches to Mbhaqanga music

Mthembeni Mbili's latest tracks are available from all online music platforms.

After more than two decades of blessing gospel music lovers with smooth songs, musician Mthembeni Mbili has switched to an old music genre, Mbhaqanga.

A legend in the game, Mbili from Gamalakhe Township near Port Shepstone recently released his first two Mbhaqanga hit songs, Inkinga Yimali (Money is a problem) and Indoda emadodeni (a man amongst men).

Mthembeni said he is not leaving gospel music, he is still a member of a group called Boys in Action, but wants to experiment with other types of music.

He said he was introduced to music as a young boy back in 1992, and his late uncle Goodboy Ndlovu owned every release of the popular Soul Brothers Band.

“Growing up in that environment has made it easy for me to switch because this is a genre I know from an early age. I would say both gospel and Mbhaqanga are running through my veins. My late uncle used to make us dance to his favourite Soul Brothers hits, not knowing he was planting Mbhaqanga music in me,” said Mthembeni.

He said another uncle was a church pastor, and singing in the church choir also helped him a lot.

His latest tracks are available from all online music platforms.
