Jay Pillay: Routine road lesson maintenance – for learners

In the 'school corner' of your home, make a prominent sign that says, Quiet. Routine Lesson Maintenance in Progress.

On a recent long road trip, I saw several boards: Routine Road Maintenance. Now, think of every 40 minute classroom lesson as a journey, mostly to new places – with your teacher as your guide.

Here’s a challenge: Whenever the next exam occurs, you’ll be expected to make the trip again. But, this time, you’ll be alone.

Good news: Between the lesson and the exam, you can repeat the journey as many times as you have time for! Yes! Repeat the journey every afternoon. Say it was a double maths lesson.

Repeat the journey by reading the textbook, by thinking about your teacher’s words, by recalling the questions asked during the lesson, by doing the homework, and (most importantly) by identifying the parts of the route you can’t retrace.

Then do whatever you need to make sure you don’t get lost – especially when you repeat the journey during an exam. (Pause here. If there’s ‘a part of the route you can’t retrace’ – that means there’s a weakness in your understanding of a concept. That is important information. Make a note of it. Get help from your teacher. Don’t ignore it.)

And then comes the weekend! Hallelujah! You have more time to repeat the journey. Again.

Idea. In the ‘school corner’ of your home, make a prominent sign that says, Quiet. Routine Lesson Maintenance in Progress.

Why not?
