6 steps on how to protect your money
According to police, don't make a sudden public display of purchasing a new vehicle, or doing large-scale renovations.
A current trend in certain cases of house robbery and kidnapping locally seems to indicate that suspects have targeted homes and victims who have recently received large amounts of money through insurance claims, and more especially Road Accident Fund pay outs.
Police caution the public to protect their money by:
1. Making wise investments with their financial providers as soon as possible and keep smaller amounts of money available via banking apps and limited available funds to be accessed via ATMs.
2. Keep your financial situation private and confidential. Do not make a sudden public display of monies for example purchasing a new vehicle, embarking on large-scale renovations which give suspects the idea to kidnap or rob you.
3. Arrange for stokvel savings to be deposited directly into your account instead of having large amounts of cash on your person or at home.
4. With proper planning, it is advisable to even have stokvel savings withdrawn at another time of the year instead of always during the festive season.
5. Keep the date and amount of your stokvel withdrawal confidential.
6. Have someone reliable accompany you if it is necessary to make cash withdrawals.
