Non-profit in Kelso donates schools uniforms

The uniforms will serve as a second school uniform, something that many families cannot easily afford.

A group of 42 learners, aged 7-12 from Malangeni and Kelso, recently received additional school uniforms through a community initiative led by the organisation Gathering Together.

The group supports children through its local homework club programme.

The uniforms were distributed at a small community gathering last Saturday, where learners who regularly attend the programme were recognised for their commitment to their education.

The initiative was made possible through the support of JAM Clothing in Umzinto, with funding provided by the organisation’s head partner, the BMF Foundation.

For many of the learners, the uniforms they received will serve as a second school uniform, something that many families cannot easily afford. Having an extra uniform allows children to attend school in clean clothing throughout the week while easing the financial burden on parents and guardians.

The Gathering Together homework club provides learners with a safe and structured space where they can complete schoolwork, receive academic support and build confidence outside of their regular school hours.

Kelso zone leader Zama Gadiso, who works closely with the learners through the programme, said the initiative was a meaningful moment for the children involved.

“Seeing the children receive their uniforms was incredibly special,” she said.

“Many of them attend homework club every week and work hard at school. For some learners this second uniform will make a big difference in their daily lives, and it shows them that their efforts are rewarded and also encourages them to continue showing up.”

Homework club leaders, including Bonisele Hadebe, play an important role in guiding learners and helping them stay focused on their studies.

The long-term goal of Gathering Together is to continue expanding programmes that support young learners and remove barriers to education within the community. Organisers also hope the uniform giveaway will become an annual initiative, helping a new group of learners each year.

Through the combined efforts of volunteers, community leaders and supporting partners, the initiative reflects the impact that communities can make when they work together to support the future of their children.
