‘Great drive out’ to focus on rural tourism on KZN South Coast

The 'invest rural master plan' which was adopted in 2021 aims to work in terms of tourism with Amakhosi.

South Coast Tourism Investment and Enterprise (SCTIE) CEO, Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, said at a media briefing last week that the economy of the South Coast and KZN has stagnated.

He added that as a government entity, SCTIE, aims to improve the economy of the district.

“Ugu is well-known for its beautiful coastline and as a tourism destination. However, our rural tourism spots and heritage sites have not been given much exposure. We are now at the stage where we are embracing our ‘invest rural master plan’ which was adopted in 2021. This allows us to develop rural areas in terms of tourism working with Amakhosi.”

Sibiya said KwaXolo Caves, a well-known spot, will put the South Coast on the tourism map, and also provide job opportunities to local people. However, to further develop KwaXolo Caves is not just a government project, but it also includes the private sector.

Sibiya also mentioned KwaNzimakwe, KwaNdwalane, Umzumbe and Weza all boast tourist attractions.
“We have plans to develop these areas to the level of KwaXolo Caves, so that tourists can see the beauty of all rural areas. Our new strategy called ‘great drive out’ is where we will be focusing on and making sure that we market these areas.”

Sibiya concluded that a number of strategies and plans are in place to help grow the economy of Ugu, increase tourism and decrease poverty on the South Coast.
