Shad coming out – and going back in again!

Some fishermen are 'forgetting' the bag limit in the adrenalin rush.

THE season is at a peak and shad are the main reason that the rocks in many places are crowded with fishermen fetching their bag of four fish.

A big reason that the crowding gets bad is that some cannot count and four shad (the bag limit) is lost in the adrenalin rush.

Shad, probably the most used bait for game fish at this time of the year, are being slid back into the sea on a trace and, if watching the crowd, it’s amusing sometimes seeing shad coming out and then going in to the sea at the same time.

Garrick are on the bite with bigger fish taking the baits and one angler, using a kite, landed a garrick of 25kg. Where are the plug fishermen?

It’s so much more sporting and exciting catching garrick on a plug and I’m sure that if more anglers did this, plugging would become much more popular down here.

Another species of fish targeted here are bronze bream, yet reports are normally few now with shad on the ‘hit list’.

However, a visiting team were guided into fishing for bream and results were outstanding, with many large fish taking the bait, mainly prawn.

Yes, the bream are still wild out there and when shad fishing becomes boring, change your tackle, bait and tactics and search the reefs for these tasty table fish.
