The spring weather has attracted players to the various courses along the coast.
Wobblers wild about golf
THERE was no women’s competition at Margate Country Club last Tuesday due to Southern Natal Nomads playing at the club.
The Wobblers’ Wild Coast alliance, with two scores to count, was won by Dave Morrison, Peter Rogers, Fran Berend and Dave Parsons on 83 points.
In second place were Frank Merrill, Jim Finn, Derek Egerton and Tony Comte on 81 points.
Third place went to Alan Davies, Rob Brien, Cyril Greensmith and Ray Hubbard on 78 points.
The Arthur Tomlinson floater went to Hans Dallinger, Jan Richter, Ken Oakley and John Barker on 69 points.
The Thursday pro shop competition saw Keith Duncalf take first prize on 40 points, edging out Graham Scowby who had 39 points. John Webster was third on 37 points.
Thursday 12th September 2013. Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was Doug Johnston.
The men’s betterball Stableford last Saturday saw John Webster and Graham Scowby continue their good form and win on 52 points.
Dawie de Villiers and Kenneth Ashington were next on 49 points, followed by Piet Ludick and Kenny Wienand on 47 points.
Margaret Taylor and Lesley Erasmus won the women’s competition on 48 points. In a tie for second on 45 points were Lizzie Meyer and H Pretorius, as well as Rene Paton and Connie McArthur.
A game with a twist
YOU might remember Famous Five books by Enid Blyton. Well, in the golf world, (or at least at Southbroom) ‘Famous Five’ referred to a fun, five club competition the women played last Wednesday.
They are advised to choose wisely when selecting the five clubs. Rene Matthew had the most fun, winning on 36 points. In second place on 34 points was Michelle Davies, with Heleen Hissey on 33 points and Lee Mutch and Liz Shaw on 30 points.
Mike Jacquet won the men’s competition last Wednesday on 42 points, with Les Civin close behind on 41 points. Stuart Janvier was third on 40 points, with Paul Cole next on 38 points.
The combined Stableford last Saturday saw Malcolm Moorley, Coet Britz, Ken Alford and Norman Farrell win easily on 96 points, by four from Stan Date, Dave Page, Heiner Heindrich and Rob Churchyard, as well as Gordon Moody, Kerry Fielden, Geoff Skelton and Jonathan Shaw.
The women’s competition was won on 88 points by Julie Walker, Rene Matthew, Shelley Myers and Trudy Rush on a countout from Ruth Mosburger, Janet Barclay, Mary Carolan and Bess Germs. In third place were Mal Sheppard, Ann Simmonds, Michelle Davies and ‘ghost’ Augi D’Ewes.
Meanwhile, Gavin Sole finished second at the Champion of Champions at Kloof last weekend. He said his putter let him down, with the greens looking quicker than they really were. Still he enjoyed the experience but it remains a title that he has not been able to hook. Janet Humphrey didn’t challenge the winners but produced some good golf in patches.
Gavin leaves today (Thursday) for Rustenburg, which plays host to the SA Interprovincial tournament. Gavin is the KwaZulu-Natal captain and a veteran of 15 Interprovincials.

THE Southern Natal Nomads played their recent monthly game at Margate Country Club.
The results are as follows: Crying towel – Mike Roe; Worst playing fourball – Bruce Matthew, Dave Stevens, Jimmy Spear and Graeme Milligan; Best over 55 – Erich Buhr; Longest drive – Roelof Meyer; Best playing visitor – Raefe Dyer.
Nearest the pins: Keegan Reddy (4th), Keegan Reddy (8th), Len Wilmans (11th), Raefe Dyer (16th).
Best drawn fourball – Roelof Craig, Bernd Kankowski, Louw Lodder and Keegan Reddy. Best gross – Gavin van Wyk.
Best playing pair – Peter Brandsma and Theo Moussouris; runners-up – Leon Olivier and Roy Matkovich.
Best playing fourball – Leon Olivier, Roy Matkovich, Russell Bruce and Simon Lee.
A division – Gavin van Wyk, runner-up – Ken Morris; B division – Chris Brooks, runner-up – Clive Chambler; C division – Christopher Gilliatt, runner-up – Erich Buhr.
Like father, like son
JOHN Pritchard won the Port Shepstone Country Club individual Stableford on 39 points last Wednesday, counting out Phil Myburgh. Ken Morris was third on 38 points.
The Friday business day, sponsored by Harbour View SuperSpar, was won by Graham Dickson, Graeme Milligan, John Pritchard and Guy Yeadon on 101 points. They counted out Koko Zithumane, PK Mkhoma, Patrick Mavundla and Sipho Nxumalo.
Gavin and Jarrod van Wyk won Saturday’s competition on 48 points, two ahead of another father-and-son team of Horst and Hayden Wortmann. In third place on 45 points were Jaco Buitendag and Bevis Fairbrother as well as Neil Retief and Bernd Kankowski.
Comp for juniors
THE second leg of the monthly junior golf competition is at Margate Country Club on Sunday, September 29. The first one was held at Southbroom and was won by Connor James who leads the order of merit.
