Top start to volleyball season

The premier section saw eight teams battle it out for the cup

THE first volleyball knockout tournament of the year, held last Saturday, proved a success, with a record number of teams entering the two sections in the Neela Raman Memorial Cup.

The Marburg volleyball courts were jam-packed, as players and supporters enjoyed a day of thrilling action. The popular social section drew a huge crowd, as some of the legends of yesteryear made a return to the sport. The social final saw team Jumperz up against a highly spirited Block Boys.

The exciting encounter finally went the way of Block Boys as they claimed their first ever knockout trophy and a R500 cash prize. Block boys players, Tyron Fynn and Tigs Manisunker, won the best attacker and MVP awards respectively. Erwin Moonsamy from Jumperz took home the best setter award.

The premier section saw eight teams battle it out for the cup. After the group stages, four teams qualified for the semi-finals. The first semi-final had Falcons A come up against Paragon. Falcons A turned up the heat and beat Paragon 2-0. The second semi-final was a close affair, with Mtwalume finally beating Falcons B.

The final was a thrilling encounter as the two teams were evenly matched throughout the game. Falcons A managed to beat Mtwalume and win the cup for a second successive year. Clinton Sigamoney from Falcons A won the best attacker award, while Falcons A setter Deon Chetty won the best setter award. Thulani Sibisi from Mtwalume was named the MVP. The winners took home a cash prize of R1 000, while the runners-up won R500.

The Raman family presented two more special cash prizes. Taryn Ogle received R500 for being selected for the South African U19 team. Waleed Abrahams was chosen as the most deserving school player on the day. He won a cash prize of R500, which will be put towards his school fees for the year.The Raman family is thanked for their generous sponsorship and their continuous support of volleyball in Port Shepstone.

Players are reminded that the league starts on Thursday February 27. Only registered teams and players will be allowed to compete in the league.
