MARGATE CC

MCC is very proud of the performance of its women in the national interdistricts women’s seniors held in Pretoria. Kobie Stander, Dora Vosloo and Helen Proctor, playing for the Kingfisher senior women, brought home bronze medals this last week. Gae Gravell was also the manager of the team.

The second round of the Engel & Volkers men’s fours will take place this Friday and the teams will play each other based on their standings in the ladder. Ken Tonge’s team is leading at the moment with Tys Pringle’s team a close second, with only five points separating them. It will be interesting how the teams stand after this round. Last Saturday the club enjoyed the visit from the ‘ex-soccer pros’ and thank you to the local visitors who helped make the day memorable. Thanks to Johnny Louch for initiating the visit.

RESULTS of the 7th Heaven men’s pairs: Overall – Cliff Moakes and Herman Botha; runners-up – Alan Townsend and John Lee; second session: Graham Gold and Willie Smith; board – John Keppler.

The St Patrick’s Day competition, sponsored by Fish on the Pond and an anonymous sponsor, was won by Patrick Gilbee and Pat and Sergio Ruperto; runners-up were Martiens Zietsman and Derick and Leslie Ott. First session went to Cliff Moakes and Anjie and Graham Gold; second session to David Lindley and Willie and Ella Smith. Lucky losers were Herman Botha, Joey Anderson and Rita Zietsman and the board went to Patrick Gilbee.

Birthday greetings for March go to Margaret Moakes (3rd), Llewellyn Angus (13th), Hedley Meek (16th) and Graeme Filmer (24th).

March tabs will start an hour later at 2.30 for 3pm.

NOMADS

CHRISTMAS in March at the Village Bowling Club last Sunday was a huge success. Thanks go to Maria Picotta for the mouth-watering meal that she and her assistants served to the amazing turnout of Nomads and new members – 56 bowlers in all.

Thank you once again to Ivan and Hazel Hosken of the Village Bowling Club for all their hard work. It was a pity that the president of the Village Bowling Club was unable to attend. Thanks to Orange River Wine Cellars for its sponsorship and to the Herald for sending a photographer to record the event.

The first prize of R50 each went to Mike Davis, Dawn Oehley and Sandy Ferguson. The second prize, sponsored by Orange River Wine Cellars was won by Jan Huygen, Eula Greer and Tom Doubell. Third prize (R25 each) went to Annette Payne, Denise Brass and Bruce Coldwells, while the sportsman’s prize (R15 each) was won by Kobus Botha and Jill Brent. Nearest the jack award, sponsored by Orange River Wine Cellars, went to Ian Hutton and Myra Doubell and the whisky raffle was won by Mike Davis.

Just a reminder that the next Nomads outing will be on Sunday, April 13 at the Margate Bowling Club at the usual time, 8.30 for 9am. Remember to bring your meat for the bring and braai. All members are urged to attend if possible as the bowls will be followed by the AGM.

The next competition is the BMW day tomorrow, Friday, March 21. This is a mixed fours format and the convenor is Annette Scott. Congratulations to Heather Roberts and team on winning bronze at the interdistrict tournament.

The popular Friday night quiz with Beryl Lakin as quizmaster was again a huge success. Thanks to Beryl and all who helped.

The ex-pro footballers visited again and a wonderful time was had by all. Needless to say, seven rinks were filled and there was a good turnover in the bar. Thanks to Neville and team for all the organising.

This Sunday, March 23, will be sponsored by Park Lane Café, bowls to start at 9am and bring and braai afterwards. Women players are asked to please bring salads. Thanks to go to the sponsor. Members are asked to support all our sponsors, for without them we would have no competitions.

Members attending the KBA Academy have reported that they have learned a lot. Thanks to the academy instructors. Our men are wished good bowling at the men’s fours competition.

WINNERS of Hibiscus Insurance and Financial Brokers’ mixed trips were Rassie Erasmus, Dawn Oehley and Chrissie Chancellor, followed by Denzil Massyn, Aileen Ward and Bill Parfitt. Sessions went to Rosemary Esterhuysen, Hans Herrmann and Doronice Burger and to Martiens Olivier, Bill Eccles and Jo Olivier. Jo also won the 50/50.

The next sponsored competitions are Execudec mixed 2-4-2 next Tuesday (25th) and the women’s 2-4-2 on Monday, March 31. If you wish to enter either of these competitions please contact Hazel at 039 3125277.

Winners of the in-house drawn mixed trips were Denzil Massyn, Rosalie Bloom and Louise Mann, followed by Ina Malan, Ernie Packer and Marie Momple.

There will be the normal bring and braai at the club tomorrow, Friday 21st and on Friday, April 4, when RAC will do its draw. The next bingo will be on Friday, April 11.

Winners of The Chill Grill mixed trips played on Wednesday, March 12 were Kotie Snyman, Leigh Warner and Jaye Russell. Runners-up were Chris Forward. Brian Cole-Cook and Pat Miller and the second session was won by Graham and Anjie Gold with Rina Fourie. The 50/50 board went to Aloysius Weir.

With no competitions taking place next week, the next sponsored competitions will be the Leon de Vos and Josias mixed pairs on Friday, April 4 and the Dolphin Pub & Grill men’s pairs on Sunday, April 6.

WINNERS of the Cupboard Value open trips were Ray Visser, Brian Muir and Brian Cross with 4+18. First session winners were Eddie Louw, Chummy Smith and Norma Louw with 2+ 7 and second session winners were Trevor Heywood, Ian Hutchins and Trixi with 2+8. Sportsman’s prize went to Frikkie Brits and Johan and Doreen van der Westhuizen. Winners of the club’s women’s pairs were Rae Barber and Trish Steyn. Runners-up were Norma Louw and Sandy Ferguson.

The next sponsored competition will be the Something Nice drawn trips, which will be twilight bowls on Friday, March 21 at 3 for 3.30pm followed by a bring and braai. This will also be the social evening when the accumulator prize will be drawn. The Fruit & Veg mixed 2-4-2 will take place on Friday, March 28.

THE monthly mixed trips sponsored by Mooi Rivier Brokers on Wednesday, March 12 was rained out. Winners of the nominated mixed trips played last Friday were Chris Snyman, Dennis Lewis and Jackie Marais. Second prize was won by Bez Bezuidenhout, Hana Svoboda and Louise Shone. Session prize was awarded to Malky McManus, Isobel McManus and John Mett Jnr. Many thanks to Hibberdene Pharmacy for its generous sponsorships. The 50/50 was won by Jackie Marais. A special meeting was held after the mixed trips as a secretary was needed. Annatjie Human was nominated and accepted this position. Thank you. Twilight bowls was played last Saturday afternoon and evening. One realises how valuable one’s sight is! The candles showed the rink boundaries. The next competition in the mixed trips sponsored by Hibberdene SuperSpar. Congratulations to Gloria and Ashleigh Taute who celebrated their 50th anniversary on March 14 – a huge debate is raging as to who most deserves the medal.

CONGRATULATIONS are extended to the KBA women’s side on winning a bronze medal at SA interdistricts in Pretoria – a wonderful achievement, well done to all concerned.

All those playing in the KBA men’s and women’s fours this weekend are wished good bowling.

The ‘Expro Challenge’ and evening of entertainment held last Friday was a huge success and grateful thanks are extended to all those involved.

Terrance van Rensburg is wished a speedy recovery after recent major surgery.

Sunday morning bowls are played in mufti and everyone is welcome to come and join in a morning of fun – bowlers and non-bowlers are welcome.
