The winners showed how to make a difficult game look simple.

THERE was some quality golf produced during the Southbroom Golf Club championships last weekend.
For a start, defending champ Gavin Sole made it a hat-trick when he won by a country mile, carding a pair of 67s to win by 13 shots from Phil le Roux, who had 75 and 72.
Gavin’s worst shot of the weekend came on the putting green, when he wasn’t really concentrating and he piped one into the flower garden.
No matter how hard he or his caddy looked, the ball remained elusive!
Phil has been nicknamed ‘Boeing’ after his 7-4-7 start on Sunday into the south-westerly wind. Incredibly, he then produced eight birdies and eventually ended up level par for the round.
Malcolm Greenland was third on scores of 75 and 75.
There was drama in the B division, with Southbroom’s occasional Sean Connery double George Haynes edging Russel Mackenzie in a two hole play-off after both had finished on 170. Graham Volck and Kerry Fielden finished two shots further behind.
Brian Brasher produced a storming run on Sunday to clinch the C division, blitzing through the field with 44 points to add to his first day 36 and pip Jim di Mambro by one.
Simon Shusha was third on 74 points and Dix Vorster fourth on 73 points.
Saturday nett was won by Robby Cumming on 72, on a countout from promising junior Naude Barkhuizen.
Sunday nett went to Petrus ‘Pip’ Kemm on 70, a monumental improvement on his first day score. Wilfred Bessell was the runner-up on 72.
Dudley Simmonds won the overall nett on 143, just ahead of Hugh Purtell on 144.
In the women’s section, Heather Anderson showed her class, breezing to another title with a score of 80 and 81, superb, consistent golf.
Janet Humphrey was second on 89 and 88.
Mari Fielden won the bronze on 192, three ahead of Sandy Fitzgerald. Lorraine Cook was next on 197.
The bronze Stableford champion was Michelle van der Hoek on 55 points, seven clear of Jean Purtell.
Saturday nett went to Augustine D’Ewes on 76, by three from Di Morris. Sunday nett was won by Michelle Davies on 72, with Karen Bridgeford the runner-up on 79.
Janice Lang won the overall nett on 148, with Geraldine Treherne the runner-up on 151.

Car up for grabs

THE Halfway Toyota South Coast Margate Challenge teed off on Thursday. The competition will be held over three days and comprises golf, bowls and bridge.
The women’s comp at Margate Country Club last Tuesday was won by Corinne Greensmith on 39 points.
Lexley Lewis and Evelyn Burls had 35 points, with Lexley winning the countout.
The Wobblers’ alliance was won by Frank Merrill, Ken Norval and Dave Morrison on 85 points, with Derek Egerton, Brian Jeffreys and Rob Henning next on 83 points, followed by James Tutt, Rob Brien and Fred Harrison on 82 points.
The Arthur Tomlinson floater went to Fred Boshoff, Malcolm Redding and Andy Buchan on 60 points.
Thursday’s pro shop comp saw John Webster card 41 points and win on a countout from Rob Weyer and Denis Rehbock.
Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was Jim Finn.
Saturday’s men’s betterball Stableford was won by Ken Ashington and Dawie de Villiers on 55 points, with Dawie pivoting with Okkie Wannenburg for second place on 49 points.
In third were Flip Fourie and Johan Stoltz on 48 points.
In the women’s section, first place went to Corinne Greensmith, Wondra Bothma, Rene Paton and Beryl Williamson on 103 points.
In second spot were Maureen Ogilvie, Shannon Gottlieb, Kay Young and Anita Scheepers on 95 points.

Myburgh ful’phil’ed

PHIL Myburgh got lucky in the countout at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday.
He carded 42 points and counted out Leon Bunge and Jacky van Heerden. Gerald Koch was fourth on 38 points.
John Beekman and Mark Smith made merry last Saturday to score 49 points and win by one from Trevor Green and Craig Lindsay, as well as Pete Govender and Sanjay Singh.
In fourth were visitors from Maritzburg, Tony Antonic and Stan Carruthers on 46 points.
The monthly mug will be played this Saturday.

Mike strikes again

PRO-VISION’S third monthly mug will be held at Port Shepstone Country Club this Sunday.
Tee off times are from 8am. Players are reminded to be there 20 minutes before tee off time.
