Spearos have some success, despite the weather
The Hibberdene Couta Classic is fast approaching.
ONCE again, we have had a week of strong wind and very little fishing. Offshore anglers have had very little success with reverse currents and strong winds.
However, last week when the conditions allowed it, some good catches of tropical yellowtail, yellowtail and small amberjacks were caught using the vertical jig method around the southern pinnacle of Protea Reef.
The spearos also got wind of these fish and apparently had some very good catches.
This week looks like we are going to be shorebound again with strong north-easterly winds forecast right through to Sunday.
Hopefully we are having the bad weather before the first couta competition of the year.
Next weekend is the Hibberdene Couta Classic with some fantastic prizes up for grabs with an Ace Glider 530 with two 90hp Mercury motors valued at around R500 000.
Fishing is over two days with the briefing being held at the tent on Hibberdene main beach on Friday evening.
Even if you are not fishing, bring the family along on Saturday and Sunday and see the fish being weighed. There is always great food and a very festive beer tent on offer.
Rock and surf fishing has also been hampered by the weather with very little to be reported.
This weekend sees the second round of the NCAU champions league being held in our waters. With the first round having been held on the upper North Coast very few fish were caught, so hopefully the guys have a better round this weekend.
The estuaries are still fishing well but with winter fast approaching and the water starting to cool down very quickly anglers will not have too much longer to fish these waters.
Rock salmon, perch and juvenile kingfish are still making up the bulk of the catches with Southbroom river probably producing the best results.
It should not be long now before the shad make an appearance and hopefully we will have a decent season this year.
