Tense battles… and some one way golfing traffic
There's been a lot of golf on the go.
IN premier league action last Sunday, Kloof’s top order came good in sensational fashion to see them defeat Durban Country Club 6,5-5-5 at Kloof.
“It was very close and played in great spirit. We needed one point from five games and could not pull it off. Kloof’s top order played great golf,” said Durban CC captain, Keith Forde.
Kloof captain Paul Blackman provided the winning flourish, nearly holing a 7-iron on the last hole to win his game against Clayton Mansfield.
Toti took advantage of local knowledge to see off Durban CC ‘2’ 7-5. “It was a very important win,” said Toti skipper Bester Swart.
At Mount Edgecombe Country Club, the home team got off the mark for the season with an emphatic 9-3 win against neighbours Umhlali Country Club.
A depleted Zululand team lost 11,5-0,5 to Southern KwaZulu-Natal at Empangeni.
Here’s an unusual stat: Zululand fielded three players with the name Etienne, namely seasoned campaigner Steenkamp, making-a-return Terblanche, and promising junior Jonck.Zululand would like to have some of their big guns back for the next game.
In the next round, Toti host Royal Durban, Durban CC ‘1’ play their second team, Southern KZN are at home to Mount Edgecombe at Margate Country Club and Umhlali head up the coast the to play Zululand.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Mitchell led the U23s out of the B section at the U23 IPT at Royal Durban Golf Club last week. For the most part, it was pretty comfortable and the team won all their games.
This year team manager Peter Mitchell (Malcolm’s father) put in place some fairly strict measures to ensure the players were committed, playing and practising. It certainly reaped the benefits and it’s fair to say they dominated the B section. Only one game was tight, but they came through in the end.
“The vibes throughout the whole team were great the whole week and it was clearly visible that everyone had been practising hard and were determined to win,” said the captain.
Four of the players are still at school, namely Greg McKay, Matt Saulez, Keagan Thomas and Ruben Coetzer, so there’s some exciting talent coming through.
The team’s ‘seniors’, Mitchell, Leorin Pillay, Nishalin Nelson and Clayton Mansfield should all push for higher honours this year.
In the Cape, the seniors and super-seniors finished third and fifth respectively. They produced some gutsy golf but could not match the form produced by winners Western Province and runners-up Central Gauteng.
