THE South Coast boasts a number of talented golfers among the caddy ranks.
These players put their skill on display during the first round of the revived South Coast Caddy League at Margate Country Club recently.
Players from Margate CC, Southbroom Golf Club, Port Shepstone Country Club and San Lameer Country Club took part.
Among the top players, the level of golf is fairly competitive, but as leading player Elvis Khawula put it, the rest are there to have fun.
And that’s essentially what it’s all about. In addition, the caddies learn more about the etiquette of the game, as well as learning how to mark a card.
Margate had eight players (an A and a B team), as did San Lameer, while Southbroom and Sheppie had six players each.
Margate’s top two players are Khawula, who plays for the Southern KZN premier league team, and Patrick Mavundla, who plays for the central league team.
Southbroom’s leading lights are Robert Shusha and Jan Nqoko, while Sheppie has the Nzamas, Alton and London.
San Lameer has Richard Sikobi and Eric Shusha. Richard had a crack at obtaining his tour card at the Vusi Ngubeni Q school, but fell short.
Khawula, Mavundla and Shusha all played for the KZN caddy team at the SA Caddy IPT in Pretoria as well. Sikobi would have as well had he not gone to Q school.
The next round is at Southbroom on May 19, followed by a game at San Lameer on June 23, and then the final round at Port Shepstone in August.
