An ace for John
JOHN Crewe produced the shot of his life at Margate Country Club’s 8th hole during the meat competition last Friday, where he produced his first hole-in-one.
Needless to say he was pretty pleased with his efforts.
Earlier in the week the women’s Tuesday comp was rained out.
The Wobblers’ alliance was won by Alan Davies, John Barker and Louie Kuhn on 83 points, edging out Dieter Jucker, Fred Boshoff and Rolf Spielmann, on 82 points, as well as Konnie Konrad, Frank Merrill and Andre du Plessis.
The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Dave Parsons, Piet Pretorius and Derek Egerton on 75 points.
Thursday’s pro shop comp was won by Shannon Gottlieb on 42 points, on a count-out from Piet Ludick and Norman Bridger.
Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was Shannon Gottlieb.
Saturday’s comp saw Michael Downs card +8 to count out Juan Dixon.
On +7 were Graeme Massom and Mike Lee, followed by Angus McLachlan, on +6.
Johan Wentzel and Riaan Croucamp won the club’s knockout trophy for the year.
Andrew Curlewis has returned for a short stint after a sixth place finish at the Zimbabwe Open. He’ll then head off for Swaziland and will be eyeing another win soon.
Lizzie’s star continues to rise
PORT Shepstone Country Club’s Lizzie Currie finished in a commendable tie for 26th at the recent SA Women’s Strokeplay at Stellenbosch.
She has also been selected for the KZN team to compete in the Teams 72 Hole Champs at Mossel Bay towards the end of May, where she will team up with Tiffany Avern-Taplin and Michaela Fletcher, who was second in Stellenbosch.
Hard work on the range, especially with regards to the short game, as well as hours in the gym building strength, has definitely paid off.
“I am hitting the ball 10 metres further since I started gym. My stamina is greater and therefore it is easier for me to play 18 holes,” she said.
She has also been working with Southbroom pro Derek James, putting into practice the advice he has been giving her.
The previous Wednesday’s comp saw Leon Bunge take top honours on 40 points, followed by Phil Myburgh on 37 points and Willem Lindeque next on 36 points.
The Suid-Natal High golf day was won by BR Govender and Abel Yeeranna on 48 points, on a count-out from Mthandeni ‘Ronnie’ Mtshaka and Mot Moleele.
In third were Wonder Nxumalo and Vusi Maphumulo on 47 points, counting out Santhos Baskali and Ashoo Singh.
Ossie rocks at Southbroom
SOUTHBROOM Golf Club’s ‘Kingfisher Kompetition’ last Saturday’s was won by Ossie Osborne and Barry van der Merwe on 50 points.
In second place on 48 points were Cliff Peterson and Allen Martins, Joe Hartman and Brian Brasher, as well as Jason Ackerman and Keagan Burton. Dave Page and Stan Date were next on 47 points.
The women’s section was won by Eileen Neilson and Sandy Fitzgerald on 48 points, with Karen Bridgeford and Gill Huddy next on 45 points.
Three pairs carded 45 points, namely Sophie Peridon and Pam Quarmby, Augustine D’Ewes and Irene Schanda, Shelley Myers and Liz Shaw.
The Friday open day saw a three-way tie on 95 points. After the count-out the spoils went to Stuart and Yvonne Janvier, Ossie Osborne and Janet Barclay. Settling for second were Hjalmar Meyer, Titch and Jeanette Peyios and Joy Crutchfield, followed by Peter and Lyndy Barnett, Cleve and Julie Walker.
The Sunday mixed was won by Richard and Karen Bridgeford, Kerry and Mari Fielden on 95 points, from Geoff and Lorraine Barrow, Dudley and Ann Simmonds on 89 points.
The previous Wednesday’s competitions were won by club captain Derrik Matthew on 42 points and Geraldine Treherne on 41 points respectively.
