Falcons swoop to victory

A TOTAL of seven teams competed in the premier section of the inaugural Siva Pillay Construction Knockout Cup at the Marburg Sports Complex last Saturday.

After a tense group stage round, the top two in each group proceeded to the semi-final stage.

Falcons A came up against City Boys, while Mtwalume took on Paragon.

Falcons A easily put away City Boys to qualify for their second semi-final of the year. The other semi-final was a close affair, with Mtwalume having to put in an extra effort to overcome Paragon by two sets to one.

Paragon took the first set and seemed to be cruising in the second set.

At 22-17, and with victory in sight, Paragon did not have the big match temperament to take the set. Mtwalume rallied back to claim the second and third set to reach their third consecutive final this year.

Falcons A seemed determined to overturn their group stage loss to Mtwalume, as they dug deep to eventually claim the title.

The Mtwalume boys looked physically drained after their bruising semi-final encounter against Paragon, as they failed to claim their second consecutive knockout title.

The social section was just as exciting with former league players making a return to the game.

Jumperz Volleyball Club, a regular in the social division, proved too strong and experienced for newcomers Temple Boys C.

Temple Boys must be commended for their role in developing the sport, as they entered three teams in the tournament.

The Port Shepstone Volleyball Association would like to thank Siva Pillay Construction for sponsoring the tournament.

Koobeshan Pillay, representing Siva Pillay Construction, said that he was delighted with the turnout for the knockout and made a bold promise that next year’s tournament would be bigger and better.
