Ganes edges out Graham

There were some new faces in the matchplay final this year.

GANES Munsami won Port Shepstone Country Club’s matchplay champs for the year, beating newcomer Graham Fabricius, who is also a member of Pro-Vision, in what was a hard-fought final.
When one considers that Graham has been playing for less than two years, and is better known for his fishing skills, it is quite a remarkable achievement.
He started off as a 30 handicap and is now playing off a five. His goal is to get down to a scratch.
Ganes, who has now booked a ticket to the Champion of Champions at Kloof in September, is a very steady campaigner and his opponent will have gained excellent experience.
The Pro-Vision members were thrilled with Graham’s efforts and look forward to him becoming one of the top players on the coast in the near future.
A reminder that Pro-Vision’s next monthly mug takes place at Port Shepstone CC this Sunday, May 11, with tee off times from 8am.
The women’s title was won by Yzelle Greyling, who played Sue van den Berg in the final last Sunday.
Ken Morris and Jarrod van Wyk won the Freedom Day alliance on 49 points at Port Shepstone Country Club last Monday.
Wednesday’s comp was won by Charles and Wayne Mostert on +12, by two from Gerhard Labuschagne and Dave Mee.
In third place on +9 were Gerald Koch and Dennis Schmidt.
The Maritzburg College cricket tour fund-raiser took place last Thursday. It was held to raise funds for the first team’s tour to Sri Lanka next year.
South Coaster David Small is part of that team.
The winners were Mot Moleele and Emmanuel Mseleku on 51 points, followed by John Beekman and Jess Verster on 46 points, on a countout from Teddy and Justin Pillay, as well as Ewald Ziervogel and Dave Milne.
The Auto Exec monthly mug took place last Saturday, with Willem Lindeque carding the best gross of 80 in breezy conditions.
The overall mug winner was John Spencer on nett 68. Juliana Ziervogel has the best Stableford score of 42 points.
The A, B and C divisions were won by Nic Botes (nett 73), Mike Webster (nett 69) and Dennis Schmidt (nett 70) respectively.
This Friday is the monthly business day, cost is R140 including competition fee.

THE Margate Country Club women played the Captain vs Vice-Captain last Tuesday.
The best scores of the day were produced by Anita Scheepers and Lyn Meek on 45 points, on a countout from Evelyn Burls and Lesley Erasmus.Overall, the captain’s team won by a narrow margin.
The Wobblers’ alliance was won on 91 points by Frank Stephens, Karl Zurfluh and Hans Dallinger.The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Rob McGill, Dieter Jucker and Errol van Heerden on 67 points.
Thursday’s comp was won by Gordon Ross on 42 points, with Neil Townsend on 38 points and Sbu Ntozakhe on 37 points.Nearest the pin on the 16th, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was Colin Iddon.
The business day, sponsored by Georgio Express and Margate Pro Shop, was won by Juan Roos, Pat McCormick, Errol Rudman and Roy Watkins on 94 points.Nearest the pins, sponsored by the Blue Lagoon, were Sandi Johnston (2nd) and Mike Bond (16th).Saturday’s comp saw Elvis Khawula and Sbu Ntozakhe clean up on 77 points, by one from Mike Lee and Graeme Massam.The Topham open mixed greensomes were won by Mike Lee and Lexley Lewis. Dane joins Southbroom team

A WARM welcome to Dane Adendorff (22) who has joined Derek and Sheena James’s team in the pro shop at Southbroom Golf Club.
Dane has previously worked at Port Shepstone Country Club, and has recently returned from a stint at Boca West Country Club in Florida, USA.
He’s a keen golfer, playing off a handicap of 12, something he described as ‘so-so’ and upon which he would like to improve.
The Southbroom Ladies’ Classic tees off this Sunday (May 11) and will take place as a betterball Stableford over three days. Now in its 11th year, some 120 players are expected.
Yvonne Otto, Karen Bridgehead, Judy Hofman and Janet Humphrey won the alliance last Saturday on 91 points. They were followed by Margi Bonini, Janice Lang, Eileen Neilson and Rose Bishop on 90 points.
The men’s comp was won on 95 points by Kerry Fielden, Erwin Schanda, Gordon Moody and Keegan Moody. There was a three-way tie for second on 92 points, shared by Malcolm Moorley, Tony Holness, Ossie Osbourne and ‘ghost’, plus Mike Lee, Arthur Lee, Rob Meydell and ‘ghost’, as well as Chris Miller, Jonathan Shaw, Dave Neilson and Paul Cole.
The Mariners Mixed last Sunday was played as an alliance and won by Dave and Eileen Neilson, Paul and Jean Cole on 99 points.
In second place on 95 points were Janet Humphrey, Joy Crutchfield, Phil Verwey and Trevor Lauf.
The next mixed will be on Sunday, July 27.

Central stay on track

THE Southern KZN central league golf team kept their promotion bid to the B division on track with a resounding win over Kloof B at Windsor Park last Sunday.
They set things up nicely in the morning foursomes, which were much tighter than they would have liked.
Grant Richards and Naude Barkhuizen halved, as did Gary Purtell and Jarrod van Wyk.
However, Simon Lee, fresh off his recent Nomads success, and Jason Leech won 1-up, as did Ronnie Mtshaka and Patrick Mavundla.
So Southern KZN took a 3-1 lead into the afternoon.
Richards and Purtell lost, and Lee halved, but the rest brought in solid wins to secure an 8,5-3,5 victory.
The premier league team, however, went down by a narrow 6,5-5,5 to Mount Edgecombe Country Club at Margate Country Club last Sunday.
It was an extremely tight thing, but in the end the visitors holed more putts and that was the difference.
In the foursomes, Douglas Sima and David Rush lost 3/1, while Altaaf Bux and Elvis Khawula won 4/3. Gavin Sole and Jan McDermott lost 2/1 and Leorin Pillay and Nishalin Nelson halved what was a thrilling match, which included 14 birdies between the two pairs.
In the singles, losses were recorded by Sima, Rush and Khawula, while wins were chalked up by Bux, Pillay and Sole. McDermott and Nelson halved.
But all is not lost, the team can still win the league, but do have a small mountain to climb, with the next two games against Durban CC and Kloof.
